Newcastle's Barton remanded in custody

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton [ Images ] was refused bail and remanded in custody after he appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Friday charged with common assault and affray.
The 25-year-old had been arrested along with a 19-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman after an incident in the centre of Liverpool on Thursday morning.
Barton will remain in custody until a further hearing by video link on January 3, making him unavailable for Newcastle's Premier League fixtures against Chelsea [ Images ] on Saturday and Manchester City [ Images ] on Wednesday.
Barton joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Manchester City in June for a fee of 5.8 million pounds.
