India makes peace overtures…

A few months are a long time in India-Pakistan ties. Just when it looked as if the relationship was doomed to enmity, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced in Kashmir on April 18: 'We are still willing to extend the hand of friendship.'

Since then, barring the usual verbal volleys, things have only looked up -- diplomatic ties have been restored; the Delhi-Lahore bus service is on; next in line is the resumption of the Samjhauta Express and flight services.

Most important, considering that the armed forces of the two countries were in eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation last year, has been a ceasefire along the Line of Control and on the Siachen glacier.

Kicking off the New Year will be the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit in Islamabad where leaders of the two countries may hold a dialogue.
