The legend goes that Lord Rama, on his way to Lanka in search of his wife Sita, stopped at what is now Mumbai's famed Malabar Hill.

His followers were worshippers of Lord Shiva and fashioned a shivling from sand, giving the place its name, Walluka Ishwar. Wallu means sand; Ishwar is god.

But Malabar Hill, surrounded by the sea, had no freshwater source. So Lord Rama shot an arrow (or ban) into the ground and the waters of the Ganga sprang from that spot and formed the Banganga tank.

The beautiful tank is surrounded by several small temples.
