April 17, 2006 21:00 IST

Veteran musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika is ill and undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private nursing home in Guwahati.

The Dada Saheb Phalke Award-winning singer complained of uneasiness while on stage at a Bihu function, at the Noonmati area of the city last night. He was admitted to Guwahati Neurological Research Institute (GNRC) at around 2 am today.

Dr Numal Chandra Bora of the GNRC said the 80-year old singer suffered a 'mild cerebral attack' and appeared to be having a 'slight' heart problem. However, his condition was reported to be stable. "He is responding to treatment well. He will be under constant observation for the next 72 hours, during which a series of tests will be undertaken," the doctor said.

Fans thronged the hospital to inquire about Hazarika's health. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi [ Images ] also called on the artiste. Hazarika happens to be Assam's most decorated artiste, having carved a niche for himself nationally, as well as in the Hindi film industry.
