Ericsson to offer e-mail tech to Idea

Swedish equipment supplier on Monday said it has bagged a major contract to provide technology -- Ericsson Mobile Organiser -- to Idea cellular [Get Quote] enabling its subscribers to surf e-mail facility on their cell phones.

Under the agreement, Ericsson would provide EMO across eight Idea cellular networks, Ericsson top officials told PTI.

"Ericsson has assisted us to introduce this trend-setting service in an extremely competitive market. It is highly important for us to offer a solution, such as this, that will position Idea Cellular as the prime driver in the corporate enterprise telecom market," Vikram Mehmi, CEO, Idea, said.

"Mobile e-mail is one of the key service the corporate segment wants to use and we believe that working together with Ericsson as our technology partner can make push Idea mail service as a major driver of the mobile and internet-multimedia business," he said.

Asked about the financial parameters of the contract, officials declined to comment.

Commenting on the deal, Mats Granryd, MD of Ericsson India Pvt Limited, said the subscribers of Idea cellular would be allowed to stay connected to e-mail in a "very cost-effective way."

Idea becomes the first private cellular operator in India to deploy Ericsson's EMO technology. According to Ericsson, the EMO technology has won various awards for its commercial perspective.
