India, China to be global giants: US think-tank

January 14, 2005 13:19 IST

By the year 2020, India [ Images ] will become an economic giant vying with China and the US for global supremacy, the US-based National Intelligence Council said on Thursday.

America's top intelligence analyst also predicted that the world economy will grow 80 per cent in 2020 compared to 2000 and average income will be 50 per cent higher.

The council went on to say that while the United States' dominance over global economy will continue, Asian giants like India and China, also the world's two most populous nations, 'will see their clout grow substantially'.

The council, in its report said, if the 1900s is popularly known as American Century, the 21st century may well belong to India and China.

"A combination of sustained high economic growth, expanding military capabilities, and large populations will be at the root of the expected rapid rise in economic and military power for both countries."
