C-DAC language software price halved for a monthSalil Murthy in Bombay
In a special one-month offer, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing in Pune has slashed by half the price for its Indian language software.
The software enables users to compute in all the regional languages. It costs Rs 5,000 but till June-end it can be bought for Rs 2,000. Another Rs 500 would get you a keyboard sticker and an instruction manual.
C-DAC had launched its LEAP Personal Publisher last October but prohibitive costs prevented home user from adopting it.
Chandrashekhar Raje, coordinator, GIST Business Division of C-DAC, told Rediff On The Net that feedback from customers and distributors has now prompted them to offer the package at a reduced price.
He said, taking advantage of the holiday season and the fact that computer prices are falling, C-DAC offered the 50 per cent discount scheme in Pune and Bombay.
The LEAP Personal Publisher is specifically aimed at the small-office home-office market segment, he said. The strategy was also pointed at by C-DAC Executive Director Vijay Bhatkar who launched the scheme in Pune earlier today.
The LEAP Personal Publisher, available on CD, helps users to undertake routine correspondence, prepare legal documents, brochures, minutes of meetings, training materials and such other documents in any Indian language of choice.
It also enables the user to print invitation cards and visiting cards on the computer. For the purpose, the software has provided for a plethora of templates (for different type of letters, faxes, greeting cards etc) and clip-arts which could be utilised to embellish the documents and make them more impressive.
The software can also spell-check documents. Right now, the spell-check facility is available for only Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. But this will soon be extended to all regional languages.
It is estimated that 6,000 to 7,000 copies have already been sold. Of these 90 per cent were bought by individuals, claimed Raje. Personal Computer manufacturers like HCL HP, Wipro, Packard Bell and Creative Labs are bundling the LEAP Personal Publisher with their products.
