NCR Corp to make ATMs in IndiaNCR Corporation, the global leader in automatic teller machines, has plans to set up manufacturing units to produce low-cost ATMs in India in the next two to three years.
This would be necessary for us to build tailor-made ATMs in local languages for the needs of Indian banks in the next three to five years, said NCR Country Manager Loney Antony.
"Once we go for manufacturing these ATMs locally, the minimum price might come down to Rs 270,000 to Rs 300,000," Antony said.
Of the over 1,000 ATMs currently installed in India, NCR has supplied over 500 units.
The company's share would further go up to around 70 per cent of the Indian market in the next couple of years following introduction of new software based products that include data warehousing system for banks that would transform customer transactions into a long lasting relationship, promised Tony Grandidge, vice-president of NCR Corporation.
Tony informed that NCR Corporation has been investing $1.5 million annually in India to develop its marketing and after-sales service infrastructure.
Besides, it has spent about $20 million to develop various software packages in India for its worldwide ATMs and other banking products.
Companies like Wipro, Infosys and Datapro are closely working with NCR to develop software solutions.
NCR has plans to extend local language based ATMs from the present 6 to 15 languages during the current year since the needs for such low-cost language based ATMs are likely to grow with expansion of ATMs network across the country not only by the new private sector banks but also by public sector banks.
At present, State Bank and ICICI Bank have installed such local language based ATMs.
Asked about the growth of ATMs in India, Tony Grandidge said that India would require over 2,000 ATMs by the end of 2000 and has a potential to grow over 5,000 ATMs in the next two to three years.
Besides ATMs, NCR provides equipments for retail industry, cross-industry, national account solutions and data warehousing.
"We have the expertise to build and provide tailored technology solutions that enable the banks to grow and manage their profitable customer relationship," he claimed.
